From today’s Gospel:
The angel said to her:
“Hail, full of grace! The Lord is with you.”
But she was greatly troubled at what was said
and pondered what sort of greeting this might be.
Ever had that kind of initial reaction to God showing up in your life? It’s funny how sometimes I pray for some grace or other and then when God shows up to offer me what I asked for, I say, “Well, that’s not exactly what I had in mind…”
My story of how I experienced my call to religious life and to this community is once such example… I’ll leave that for another post, maybe tomorrow.
I suspect that some folks think that once one enters the convent, life is pretty straightforward. That a nun simply obeys orders, does what she’s told, and in return, she is taken care of for the rest of her life.
I must admit that at times, this version of a nun’s life has its appeals, but really, to me, it is not really living.
I’m sure the invitation Mary received was not exactly what she had in mind either. And she was able to say yes anyway. So, that’s what I try to do. It may not be always “YES” for me, it’s sometimes “NOT YET” or “MAYBE”, but it’s never “NEVER”.
