My prayers are with the people of Crandon, Wisconsin after a shooting spree by a sheriff’s deputy, of all people. What is this world coming to? Apparently, the shooter is also dead, so we may never know what caused him to do this horrendous thing.
I’m reminded of a song by Judy Small, written after the 1989 Montreal Massacre, when a gunman shot and killed 14 female engineering students. I shall quote a small portion of it. I realize it may be hard to hear, but I assure you, I am in no way intending the question posed as a judgment on all men…
And so we wonder why, as we try to make sense of this
Why is it always men who resort to the gun, the sword and the fist
Why does gunman sound so familiar while gunwoman doesn’t quite ring true
What is it about men that makes them do the things they do ?
A provocative question, no? Remember, please do not interpret this to mean that the songwriter is condemning all men. Just wondering why mass murderers and serial killers are overwhelmingly male? I wonder if in a matriarchal culture, it would be women who are the perpetrators of such heinous crimes? I wonder how often this would happen if we had meaningful gun control laws in the U.S. Just lots of wondering, but with no answers…
Let’s keep all touched by this tragedy in our prayers.
